End of the Year News

Elementary Families:

As summer is upon us I cannot emphasize enough the importance of reading.  Research shows that children that continue to read regularly over the summer maintain a higher reading level in the fall.  Avoiding that summer slip will be extremely beneficial, especially with the state testing that occurs right away in the fall.

To assist with motivation, summer calendars will be coming home to record reading minutes.  I am challenging the children to try to read a minimum of 5 hours for the month of June and July and for 4 hours in the month of August.  This averages to about 15 minutes per day Monday- Friday. Children can read to someone, read silently, or be read to. (And of course they can always read more!)

No matter how many minutes are read, children will earn a “fun reward” in the hall display if they choose to participate. A letter is going home the last day of school with more information.  (If you need a new copy please contact the elementary office.)
